"Le Meraviglie" is Alice Rohrwacher’s second film and it won the Grand Prix du Jury at the 67th Cannes Festival earlier this year. The film lasts 110 minutes and is set in an isolated farmhouse in the umbrian countryside. Wolfgang is a German beekeeper who, together with his wife Angelica, their four daughters and friend Coco, cultivates the land and their lives are governed by the seasons. It is summer and Wolfgang’s daughters, Marinella, Luna, Caterina and the eldest, Gelsomina, are helping their father make honey. Gelsomina is of fundamental importance in the family firm as she is not afraid of bees and is very intelligent, so everyone in the family, including her authoritarian father, turns to her for advice. This happens when the family decides to introduce a young boy, Martin, into the house as part of his reeducation programme. Her most difficult task will be to convince her father to take part in a television competition, Il Paese delle Meraviglie (Wonderland), presented by the white fairy, Milly Catena. It is a contest to choose the best agricultural product. Gelsomina will eventually succeed in persuading her father to go on television and talk about his bees. She will also gain the trust of Martin and the two will become very close. But, thanks to the television competition, will she manage to reach out beyond the boundaries of “Wonderland”? Will she be able, stimulated by the encounter with Martin, to be recognised as a woman and not be considered a child any more by her family?

“Appartenere-promettere-mantenere”: queste le parole chiave dell' intenso e poetico "Le Meraviglie" vincitore del Grand Prix du Jury al 67 Festival di Cannes. Il secondo film che vede alla regia Alice Rohrwacher è ambientato in un casale isolato nella campagna umbra, dove Wolfgang, apicoltore tedesco, insieme con la moglie Angelica, le quattro figlie e l’amica Coco, coltiva la terra e conduce una vita scandita dai cicli naturali. È estate: le quattro figlie di Wolfgang - Marinella, Luna, Caterina e la primogenita Gelsomina - aiutano il padre nel laboratorio del miele. All’interno della piccola azienda, cosi come nelle questioni in ambito familiare, è Gelsomina a rivestire un ruolo importante: lei infatti non teme le api e viene coinvolta nelle decisioni da prendere. La primogenita si troverà ad affiancare la sua famiglia anche nella scelta di introdurre in casa un giovane irrequieto di nome Martin che deve compiere un programma di rieducazione. La sfida più importante per Gelsomina sarà quella di convincere il Padre a partecipare al contest televisivo “Il Paese delle Meraviglie” condotto dalla fata bianca Milly Catena, un concorso per selezionare il miglior prodotto agricolo della campagna. Gelsomina convincerà il padre ad andare in televisione per rendere pubblica la loro dedizione nel lavoro con le api. Questo evento è intrecciato con la storia di amicizia (forse un primo amore) che nasce tra la giovane e Martin. Riuscirà Gelsomina, spronata da questo concorso, a uscire dal suo piccolo nucleo e varcare quel confine del suo Mondo di Meraviglie? Sarà altrettanto capace, stimolata dall’incontro con Martin, di farsi riconoscere come donna e non più come bambina da tutta la sua famiglia?
